Scope of Work: This project was an interior renovation to create a comprehensive live foods culture laboratory as one of several ways Shedd Aquarium prepares daily diets for its 32,000 animal residents. Due to the high humidity and volume of liquids present, plastic lumber and stainless steel were used throughout to create the numerous custom racks and tables. Custom fabricated plastic lumber millwork items were created and assembled onsite by Troop’s in‐house carpenters. For secure access, a new vinyl coated chain link fence was installed. A new electrical subpanel was installed for this dedicated space, and power was piped and installed at each table or rack using fiberglass uni‐strut supports. Negative air was created behind the Algae tanks using an inline exhaust fan. Special material handling was required for the stainless steel racks installation due to the weight of the unit and site constraints. Specialty grating was installed, into each rack onsite, to structurally support the load of the tanks. Troop performed general contracting and onsite construction supervision/quality control services, as well as, self‐performed carpentry and laborer work.
