Scope of Work: This project included extensive demolition of the existing spray applied acoustical finish and plaster (including metal lath) of the 1923 gymnasium and mezzanine ceilings of the high school. Demolition also included temporary support of existing light fixtures, fire protection piping, and HVAC equipment. After demolition, new installation included a contiguous layer of drywall followed by installation of Tectum—brand sound acoustical panels. All new Tectum panels had to be field cut around existing HVAC and other ceiling penetrations. In conjunction with the new ceiling system, new fire sealant and painting at the perimeter was included. Finally, all new energy efficient lighting was installed. Unique to this complete demolition and ceiling system replacement project was the large effort in bringing in scissor lifts to complete the work. The gymnasium floor is approximately 8’‐0” above existing grade with no elevator access. A complex set of ramps that could support the weight of a scissor lift were designed and fabricated by Troop Contracting (Troop). Troop fully protected the gymnasium floor with plywood, protected other existing equipment, and set up dust partions. A negative air containment was created using a HEPA filter 2000 CFM air scrubber to mitigate dust and fumes from demolition and other construction activities from entering the occupied areas of the school.
